We published a new study about remote workers’ job satisfaction and personal wellbeing in Utah. As the Remote Online Initiative evolves, we continue to deepen our understanding of remote work through scholarly research.
This latest study delves into key variables impacting job satisfaction and personal wellbeing among remote workers in Utah. We also examine the influence of HR practices on organizational culture. The findings reveal that remote employees who find meaning in their work, take pleasure in their responsibilities, have a voice in decision-making, and align with their organization’s objectives are generally more satisfied in their roles. These individuals also tend to have longer tenures, not out of necessity, but because they genuinely want to stay.

A framework to help leaders approach remote work more holistically and effectively.
Establishing clarity on the 5 W’s (who, what, where, when and why) can help leaders better think about whose interests or outcomes they are prioritizing when devising remote work policies. The 5 W’s are a tool to help ensure organizations get all the information on the table for a fruitful discussion, they are not entirely independent elements.
Take decisions around what work is suited for increased flexibility. Although this is a conversation about “where” and is contingent on “what” leaders define as key outcomes, it also has a major impact on who receives the benefits, with consequences for employees’ sense of fairness and equity.

Susan Lewis spent her career as a full-time accounting professional for Washington County local government. She and her husband recently retired, sold their home, and moved to a new home in the small, rural town of Enoch.
After taking USU Extension’s Certified Remote Work Professional course, Susan was able to learn new skills that have helped her in consulting part-time from the comfort of her home in a remote office setting.
“I have my separate space in our new house and can remotely access the forms and spreadsheets that I need to do my work. Thank you for offering this course, it helped me a bunch!”

What remote jobs are available at Target?
A list of available positions at Target can be found at the company’s jobs search portal.
In order to filter for remote positions only, type “remote” in the keyword field during your search. Because retail is primarily a front-facing line of work — that is, most positions involve dealing with customers and at stores in person — the number of available positions for remote work is limited.

The mission and purpose decline in remote workers
The most worrying finding in the latest Gallup survey is that employees who can do their work remotely have an eroding connection to the mission or purpose of their organization.
The drop is more pronounced recently for exclusively remote employees -- 28% strongly agree they feel connected to their organization’s mission and purpose, tying the for this group from 2011. Attention leaders: This is a significant challenge, that's why the first module we teach in our record low remote work leadership course is all about communicating vision and mission.
The pattern of eroding mission and purpose for remote workers speaks to an unintended consequence of physical separation. If not managed intentionally, this can lead to psychological separation.
