Student Spotlight: Sarah Markel

USU Extension's ROI program caught the attention of Sarah Markel and her husband when they moved to Utah in 2018. Though she continued teaching, the Certified Remote Work Professional and Certified Tech Sales Professional courses remained at the back of her mind. However, after teaching through the pandemic, she decided to start upskilling to find a position in educational technology sales or implementation/onboarding. She eventually completed the courses to further her knowledge and add to her resumé. She found the courses useful in leveraging technology for remote work, enhancing efficiency, and staying connected with colleagues. In addition, the tech sales course taught her how to apply sales skills in real-life situations. Sarah praises USU instructors for their support and MarketStar employees for providing a clear understanding of the nitty-gritty of tech sales. Overall, Sarah is grateful for the knowledge gained through the USU ROI program, which she expects will eventually lead to a career outside traditional education.

New USU Extension flood website

In response to the wet spring this year Utah State University Extension recently launched a new website called flood.usu.edu to provide homeowners, businesses, and others with resources on flood preparation, response, and recovery. The website includes information on sandbagging, flood insurance, water storage, 72-hour kits, standing water, food safety, mold protection, tips for protecting your home or business, and more. Additional information will be added to the website as it becomes available.

Remote jobs

One-fifth of Utah’s total workforce now working from home

Utah actually exceeds the national averages for home-based workers. In 2019, about 7% of Utahns were working from home on a regular basis. That number jumped to 20% by 2021, according to the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute.

Why remote work is getting harder to find

In this news segment, LinkedIn's chief economist Karin Kimbrough joins Morning Joe to discuss the state of the U.S. labor market. Kimbrough notes that as the labor market is cooling, job seekers are intensifying their search efforts. Kimbrough also discusses why remote work is getting harder to find.

With the market for remote jobs intensifying, completing USU Extension's Certified Remote Work Professional course will help you learn how to stand out and increase your chances of finding a remote work job. In this course you will gain the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in a remote work environment and position yourself as a qualified candidate in this competitive job market. Don't miss out, enroll in USU Extension's Certified Remote Work Professional course today and stay ahead of the curve!g

Tweet of the week by @AdamMGrant

Being in the office is a double-edged sword.

Data: when our colleagues sit nearby, we get more feedback. That boosts learning and retention among junior people—but reduces productivity for senior people.

We need time together and time apart. Hybrid is the best of both worlds.
